This design project presents an innovative housing complex which endeavors to address the aforementioned social and environmental concerns by means of the key concepts of densification, and the intimate inclusion of recreational spaces, and social and commercial amenities within the housing development. The aim is to offer a solution for Sustainable and Balanced Development, a necessary strategy towards an optimistic future.

The Project Complex utilizes the site of The Pine Basin at the intersection of the Pine Plantation Road and the Pine East-West Boulevard. This site was symbolically chosen because of its proximity to Barbados’ urban core as well as its proximity to contrasting residential areas.

The location of housing, the size of land, size of house and materials of which housing is built act as powerful markers in Barbadians’ claim to their sense of identity. The response to the need for housing has revealed this highly culturally charged approach to housing.
